His Divine Lineage

His Divine Lineage

"The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the Son of David, the Son of Abraham...So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations, from David until the captivity in Babylon are fourteen generations, and from the captivity in Babylon until the Christ are fourteen generations" (Matthew 1:1,17)

We all come from a certain family tree or lineage that we were born into and that tree usually has a mixture of both bad and good fruit. Whether we can trace our family records or not, we all have a blemished past where the original sin has extended throughout all the branches.

Interestingly, when the Jewish people seek to trace their roots back, many of their ancient records were lost during the destruction of the temple. But God preserved two genealogical accounts in the gospels of Matthew and Luke that show the Jewish heritage of Jesus when you trace His parents all the way back to Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Judah, and David. Not many Jews can do this today!

This is the Messianic bloodline that represents Christ's divine lineage on earth...and the amazing truth is that you and I are somehow included in this family tree. Since Matthew records the genealogy and the birth of Jesus, we have the following words spoken by the angel of the Lord showing us that we are included in this historical account: "And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name JESUS, for He will save HIS PEOPLE from their sins.”

The moment you place your full trust in Jesus, you discover that you were already in God's heart and have always been a part of God's redemptive story! Praise the Lord for this!

God places each of us in the families that we are in and He sees each of us right where we are at today. God knows what we have been through and where we are going. HE SEES YOU...AND HE KNOWS YOU BY NAME!

Jesus sees each of us ahead of time before we ever see Him. He saw Nathaniel sitting under the fig tree spending time in secret with the Lord and it caused him to immediately believe that He was the long awaited Messiah. Jesus answered him saying, “Because I said to you, ‘I saw you under the fig tree,’ do you believe? You will see greater things than these...Most assuredly, I say to you, hereafter you shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man.” (John 1:51)

When we examine the genealogy of Jesus, we see that God makes room for those with a sinful past and even includes four women who God redeemed from their sins before arriving to the virgin Mary who was chosen by God before the Holy Spirit graciously conceived the Christ Child in her womb.

All five women mentioned each had to deal with guilt or shame...

  • Tamar disguised herself and played the harlot with her father in law, Judah, and gave birth to twins.
  • Ruth was a Gentile Moabite widow who God used to restore hope to Naomi and contribute to the line of David when she married Boaz.
  • Rahab was a Gentile harlot who chose to fear God and protect the Israelite spies, rather than herself, when they were preparing to destroy Jericho.
  • Bathsheba was the wife of Uriah and the woman that David pursued to have an affair with which contributed to the shame of David’s dynasty
  • Mary was the betrothed wife to Joseph and the virgin mother of Jesus who believed God's Word and surrendered her will to mother the Christ.

What do we learn from these women? God chooses to use flawed people to accomplish HIs great redemptive purpose and plan of salvation.

The Apostle Paul wrote, "For you see your calling, brethren, that not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called. But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty; and the base things of the world and the things which are despised God has chosen, and the things which are not, to bring to nothing the things that are, that no flesh should glory in His presence" (1Cor. 1:26-29).

God desires to get ALL THE GLORY in the works that He did back then as well as the works that He is still doing today!

If you believe in the Lord, then the Savior and the Christ has been conceived in your heart by the same Holy Spirit through faith.  You are no longer your own but were bought with a price when Jesus came to save the world of their sins. You are now included in the divine lineage by faith and your name is written in the Lamb's Book of Life (See Phil. 4:3, Rev. 3:5, 20:12,15). This means that you are known by your Father in heaven and that your life is wrapped up in His life and your name is preserved under His Name!

"But YOU have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, to an innumerable company of angels, to the general assembly and church of the firstborn who are registered in heaven, to God the Judge of all, to the spirits of just men made perfect, to Jesus the Mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling that speaks better things than that of Abel" (Heb. 12:22-23)

Thus, as we seek to follow in the footsteps of Jesus, may we know that He is not only the Son of Abraham and the Son of David, but He is our Immanuel "God with us" and the true Christ and the Savior of our souls.

Questions for Discussion in our Home Groups:

1. Have you ever looked into your family tree and learned some interesting facts about your family story? Would you be willing to share something?

2. When you feel unworthy and ashamed of your past, how does this divine lineage of Jesus encourage you and comfort you? What is your understanding of the Lamb's Book of Life and your place and registry in it?
