Speaking To the Glory of God
“Either make the tree good and its fruit good, or else make the tree bad and its fruit bad; for a tree is known by its fruit...For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good things, and an evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth evil things. But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment. For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.” (Matthew 12:33-37)
There is nothing more powerful than the words that proceed from the mouth of God. With His Words and the work of His hands, God spoke and created all things into existence. When He created mankind after His image and likeness, He gave us the ability to speak words that influence and enhance relationships. We are the only creatures on earth that are able to communicate on such a complex and comprehensive rational and relational level such as we do.
Words give information and come from a good or evil source of inspiration. Words are the tools we use to communicate, whether meaningful sounds, syllables, signs, or written letters, which serve as the building blocks of all language.
Words shape the way see the world, understand the world, and interact with it.
Words have great potential to do good or to do evil. Since we have been corrupted by sin, our words can bring either life or death. Adam and Eve learned the power of words after receiving LIFE FROM GOD and then listening to and obeying the deceptive words of the serpent in the Garden where DEATH CAME TO BE. One thing remains certain, OUR WORDS ALWAYS MATTER!
Proverbs 18:21 say, "Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it will eat its fruit."
When Jesus spoke to His disciples, He told them, "It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are SPIRIT, and they are LIFE" (John 6:33). Jesus spoke words that can instruct us, heal us, and align us with His will and heart. However, since there are many different sources that a person can draw from to receive information and inspiration, we must take heed to the things that we have heard and to the words that we choose to communicate to others. OUR LIFE DEPENDS ON WHICH WORDS WE HEAR AND HEED!
In addition, Jesus taught that we will be judged for every idle word that we speak and that the words that come out of our mouths are really the overflow of our hearts. If our hearts are truly treasuring Jesus and are set on the good things that He has given to us, we will speak good things to others. However, if our hearts are turning toward other things and living for our own selfish pleasures, our words will expose us and reveal the true condition of our hearts.
James elaborated on Jesus' teaching when he connects the heart and tongue by saying, "If anyone among you thinks he is religious, and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this one’s religion is useless" (James 1:26).
James teaches on the power of the tongue when he says, "My brethren, let not many of you become teachers, knowing that we shall receive a stricter judgment. For we all stumble in many things. If anyone does not stumble in word, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle the whole body. Indeed, we put bits in horses’ mouths that they may obey us, and we turn their whole body. Look also at ships: although they are so large and are driven by fierce winds, they are turned by a very small rudder wherever the pilot desires. Even so the tongue is a little member and boasts great things" (James 3:1-5)
Once words leave our mouths, they cannot be taken back!
Our words fly through the air looking to land on the runway of someone’s ear gate. Sometimes, they land smoothly and other times, it is a crash landing!
Consider these Descriptions of the Tongue:
With great freedom comes great responsibility! Again, our words always matter!
SO HOW CAN WE SPEAK IN A WAY THAT BRINGS GLORY TO GOD?
We need God to FIRST CHANGE OUR HEARTS and then to teach us us the mind of Christ.
Isaiah the prophet says, “The Lord GOD has given Me The tongue of the learned, That I should know how to speak A word in season to him who is weary. He awakens Me morning by morning, He awakens My ear To hear as the learned" (Isaiah 50:4).
1. Speaking the TRUTH in LOVE...
“but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head—Christ” (Eph. 4:15)
2. Speaking with GRACE ON OUR LIPS...
“Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one.” (Col. 4:6)
3. Speak what is GOOD FOR OTHERS...
“Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers.” (Eph. 4:29)
If all you do throughout your life is have a heart set on pleasing God and daily speak words of life and encouragement and truth in love to people, you will have helped to shape and impact the lives of multitudes of people in our generation and will bring great glory to God!
As 2 Timothy 1:13-14 says, "Hold fast the pattern of sound words which you have heard from me, in faith and love which are in Christ Jesus. That good thing which was committed to you, keep by the Holy Spirit who dwells in us.
