Stewardship To the Glory of God
"Let a man so consider us, as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God. Moreover it is required in stewards that one be found faithful." (1 Corinthians 4:1-2)
Everything belongs to God. He is the Creator and the Possessor of all things in heaven and on earth. This should not be surprising to us that if God made the earth, then "the earth is the Lord's and all its fullness" (Psalm 24:1). Despite man's selfish efforts to take control of things and to position themselves for power, God will say to the Son, "Ask of Me, and I will give You the nations for Your inheritance, and the ends of the earth for Your possession" (Psalm 2:8).
The amazing thing is that God desires to share His inheritance with us. He gives to each of us a personal stewardship, whereby we are entrusted with what belongs to the Lord. The Apostle Paul emphasizes that it is required of us that we are found faithful as stewards. Jesus would even entrust His ministry and the advancement of His kingdom to His called disciples. He told them in Luke 12:48 that, "For everyone to whom much is given, from him much will be required; and to whom much has been committed, of him they will ask the more."
Before we consider how to be faithful with what what God has given to us, we must remember that He has given us His Spirit to steward us. He comes to indwell us, teach us, convict us, change us, conform us, empower us, and enable us to do all of the Father's will. It is only by His Spirit that we can steward the things the Father has given to the Son and that the Son has given to us.
As 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 declares, "Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s."
Since we are not our own, we are to do all things unto the glory of God and to take what we have and put it in God's hands for him to bless and to break and to multiply as Jesus showed us in the miracle of the feeding of the five thousand (which was really more like 12,000 with the women and children).
There are Four General Areas that we are Called to Steward:
The TRUTH is that we have been created and redeemed by the Lord Jesus Christ. He was sent to rescue us from our sins by laying his life down on the cross and becoming sin for us so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. This is the truth that sets us free!
Therefore, let us know the truth, guard the truth, obey the truth, and share the truth with all people.
Our TIME is really God's time. He is our breath, life, and the length of our days. He is the One who is carrying out His sovereign purpose, which is unfolding in every situation we encounter and with every revolution around the sun for the purpose of His Son. Every moment matters!
Therefore, let us redeem the time, discern the times, and be in the moment wherever we are.
Our TREASURE is whatever we give worth to and value above everything else. Our treasure reveals the true desire of our heart and is either of temporal or eternal value. We are either generously spending our resources for the sake of others or selfishly wasting our goods on our personal greeds. The wise in earth will treasure what God treasures in heaven!
Therefore, let us store up our treasure in heaven by treasuring God's Word, God's people, and God's glory since that is what is going to last forever.
Our TALENTS are those things that God has given to us that allows us to participate in caring for God's people. He shares His possession with us so that we might invest all of it for His kingdom purposes and allow us to love, provide for, and build up others.
Therefore, let us use our gifts in a way that pleases our faithful Father and makes the people around us stronger and better than when we first met them.
The Apostle Peter tried to do many good things in his own strength and with good intentions but he needed to be filled with the Spirit and to be spiritually awakened to fulfill the ministry that Jesus had given to him. After learning the hard way, he instructs the brethren in this way:
"But the end of all things is at hand; therefore be serious and watchful in your prayers. And above all things have fervent love for one another, for “love will cover a multitude of sins.” Be hospitable to one another without grumbling. As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. If anyone speaks, let him speak as the oracles of God. If anyone ministers, let him do it as with the ability which God supplies, that in all things GOD MAY BE GLORIFIED through Jesus Christ, to whom belong the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen." (1 Peter 4:7-11)
