LIVING SPRINGS FELLOWSHIP

Working To the Glory of God

"And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ." (Colossians 3:23-24)

The creation record shows us that the Lord worked  for six days and then He rested. We are to enter into His rest and then work with a restful spirit so that we might work and rest, and then work and rest again according to God's heavenly order as He orders our steps. We must learn to follow the Lord's leading while we rest well and work hard.

When we are working within God's will and our soul is at rest, the work load that we have will not feel heavy or burdensome, since Christ Himself is our spiritual rest. He worked six hours on the cross and then opened up a continual rest for our souls. But we still need to know how to physically rest to work well for the Lord.

The PRINCIPLES of God's REST for the people of God involve:
  • HONORING God’s Sovereign Rule & Order
  • REDISCOVERING God’s Presence
  • CELEBRATING Our Limitations
  • CULTIVATING True Restfulness
  • CEASING from Our Daily Works
  • “BEING” before Doing

This rest is what God has made available to the believer but God always intended that His people work in the places where He places us. Our work is a part of our service and worship to God.

As sure as God placed the first man in the Garden of Eden and placed Joseph in Egypt, He has placed you right where you are today. We must learn to see the good works that God has prepared for us so that we may walk in the works that He has ordained for us. For our jobs and ministries are a core part of our calling and our sphere of influence.

"For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them" (Eph. 2:10)

Therefore, we are to BLOOM where we are planted and to BLESS those who God has planted all around us. We are to cooperate with God and to know that we bring the kingdom of God with us wherever we go since Christ is ruling and reigning in our hearts.

There are always people we are meant to influence and to introduce to Christ through our working relationships.

Just as God told Adam to "tend and keep the garden", we are called to tend and keep our hearts so that we can build up other people and benefit the business or service that we work in. We have the great privilege of partnering with God in every job and in every day that we work. No matter what kind of work it is, we are called to work hard with our hands and with our minds and with our hearts while honoring God and loving those around us.

The kind of person we are in our jobs is actually MORE IMPORTANT than the kind of job that we have.

We could have a great job but be the wrong person in that job if our hearts are too busy moaning and groaning and we are not aligned with God's will. Let us guard ourselves from OVERWORKING or OVER-WISHING for things that God has not given to us.

Everything we do matters which is why we are called to do all things with all of our hearts (heartily) as unto the Lord and not unto man. Whatever our job or calling might be at this present time, we are called to serve God and others for God's glory and the benefit of others.

So what does it look like to work to the GLORY of God?

Here are the Key Principles of Work:
  • KNOW GOD’S PRESENCE as you work.
  • WORK HARD with a servant’s heart.
  • DO AN HONEST JOB and follow all rules.
  • GIVE YOUR BEST and inspire the rest.
  • SEEK TO BLESS OTHERS for their benefit.
  • LET GOD PROMOTE YOU in His time.

When Joseph was sent ahead to Egypt, we see that he modeled all of these principles and that the Lord prospered him and Potiphar's house for his diligence, obedience, influence.

We see in Genesis 39:2-4 that, "The LORD was with Joseph, and he was a successful man; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian. And his master saw that the LORD was with him and that the LORD made all he did to prosper in his hand. So Joseph found favor in his sight, and served him. Then he made him overseer of his house, and all that he had he put under his authority."

Proverbs 22:29 says, "Do you see a man who excels in his work? He will stand before kings; He will not stand before unknown men."

This is significant when you consider that everything seemed to be falling apart rather than falling into place for Joseph, since none of his hardships were revealed in his prophetic dream. He had the end result revealed to him but he did not know the process.

The process is where the fierce battles and the fiery tests take place but it is also where our character is forged.

When we work to the glory of God, we will see that God is always working all things together for His glory and our good. Whether in this life or the next, we will see that God promotes and rewards His servants, since "godliness with contentment is great gain" (1 Tim. 6:6).

Jesus said, “The harvest truly is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest" (Matt. 9:37-38).

Will you answer this prayer request of the Lord and be a laborer in His harvest? Will you walk today and each day in the works that God has prepared for you?

For when our lives and work are said and done, we will still be serving God in His kingdom but we will not have the opportunity to do the works that God has prepared for us to fulfill here on earth for such a time as this.

Therefore, let us work to the glory of God until Revelation 14:13 in fulfilled in our lives,  “Yes,” says the Spirit, that they may rest from their labors, and their works follow them.
