LIVING SPRINGS FELLOWSHIP

Serving To the Glory of God

“For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many" (Mark 10:45).

God is love. And love always seeks an outlet and object to care for and to express itself on. Although God is fully sufficient within Himself, His love motivated Him to create all things that exist and He chose to make us in His image and to redeem us after we rebelled against Him.

One of the ways we see love expressed is through acts of service. To serve is to look upon someone with love and a desire to give, bless, or accomplish whatever is needed or asked of you according to God's glory and our good. Psalm 123:2  says, "Behold, as the eyes of servants look to the hand of their masters, As the eyes of a maid to the hand of her mistress, So our eyes look to the LORD our God, Until He has mercy on us."

Since God has demonstrated His love and showed us His rich and abundant mercies, how can we not respond with hearts of full surrender and gratitude and "present our bodies as living sacrifices", which the Apostle Paul calls "our reasonable service" (Rom. 12:1-2).

When we serve, we are putting others before us and humbling ourselves in the process.

It comes as no surprise that the greatest servant in all the world was Jesus, who was also the Creator of this world, and the One sent to save this world from our sins. When Jesus came to the earth as a Man, He fully submitted Himself to His Father and made Himself a bondservant with the aim to only do those things that please Him (John 8:29).

Isaiah the prophet predicted the day of the Messiah's coming and described Him as the Suffering Servant on various occasions. Isaiah 42 declares:

"Behold! My Servant whom I uphold, My Elect One in whom My soul delights! I have put My Spirit upon Him...A bruised reed He will not break, And smoking flax He will not quench; He will bring forth justice for truth."

While Jesus was on the earth, He served the least, the last, and the lost. He was moved with compassion for those who were weary and scattered like sheep without a shepherd (Matt. 9:36). He was so devoted to His service to God, that He did not fear man or the hold back from rebuking the religious leaders who were doing things contrary to the will of His Father in heaven.

When Jesus saw the multitudes, He could see each individual and know their specific needs at specific times. In His first miracle, Jesus served both the master and the guests at the wedding at Cana when it was brought to His attention that the wine had run out. His earthly mother Mary was eager to see Him perform some miracle and to reveal His identity as the true Son of God and promised king, but Jesus would only act if His Father in heaven was guiding Him.

When Mary was hopeful that Jesus would do something, she turned to the servants at the wedding and said, “Whatever He says to you, do it.” (John 2:5). The servants at this wedding leave us with a great example by giving us these Three Principles of Service:

1. Be Fully Available to God’s Will
2. Be Fully Obedient to God’s Word
3. Be Fully Believing in God’s Power

These servants were readily available to do whatever they were instructed to do, and they fully obeyed with great zeal by filling the water pots to the brim and showed faith that Jesus would accomplish something good as they faithfully brought the water to the master of the feast. When the water was miraculously turned into wine, they knew what had taken place as "Jesus manifested His glory."

Whenever we serve God, we are to serve the Lord with gladness and with full readiness to fully obey. This has been the posture of many servants of the Lord throughout the generations who followed God and even later learned to go the extra mile to show their faithfulness to Him.

When Joshua was confronted with the Commander of the Lord's army, He humbly worshipped and asked, “What does my Lord say to His servant?” (Josh. 5:14).

When Samuel was being raised in the house of God, the Lord kept calling out to him one night until He finally got the boy's attention. Samuel answered, “Speak, for Your servant hears.” (1 Sam. 3:10)

When David was anointed as king of Israel, he gathered many men into his army but the ones that he wanted close to him were those he deemed were faithful servants. In one of his psalms, David writes, "My eyes shall be on the faithful of the land, that they may dwell with me; He who walks in a perfect way, He shall serve me" (Psalm 101:6).

O how we need more willing servants of God today who are willing to count the cost and lay down their lives and do whatever is needed for the Master's service.

Pray that God will make you a faithful servant all of your days and consider how you can join the Lord in the work that He is already doing today.

When our lives come to an end, what will matter most is what we accomplished for Most High God. Therefore, may we live each day for the glory of our Lord until we hear Him say, “Well done, good and faithful servant; you were faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord'" (Matt. 25:21).
